Is virtual worlds approaching the real world?

I heard about the new virtual world ‘Twinity‘ which has just launched β version recently. Twinity was created by Metaversum, German company. I log in the second life(SL) sometimes and I enjoy such a virtual world.

Twinity team says,…

Imagine a virtual world that brings the dream of “virtual reality” back to life – a place bursting with real people and real experiences. Twinity is not an exercise in digital escapism. Instead, think of it as the virtual extension of your life. Even your avatar will look pretty familiar…

http://metaversed.com/30-oct-2007 According to the article, you don’t have the house you create like SL.

All of the spaces that users can inhabit are created by the company. You can rent an apartment in a building, but not create your own building.

As you can see from the image above, navigation follows a real word theme. That’s the “lobby”, a map of the real world which users can zoom in on by continent, then drill down to individual buildings, spaces and apartments.

Hm, the world of Twinity looks like the real Europe. We can live an apartment in a some city of virtual Europe, can’t we? In Japan a venture company will launch ‘meet-me’ next December. The world of meet-me is a virtual Tokyo.

Metaversum will also release SNS called ‘yumondo’ which covers some information on cities around the world. I wonder the company will mix the two service in the future.

I read some article about an amalgam of Google map and Second Life. We may like a virtual world similar to the real one better. We cannot image the world map of SL which is broading every time.

Although SL isn’t similar to the real world now, the next generation of SL may become a copy of the real world or Twinity will replace it.
